We are Rob and Kate; we quit our jobs as building surveyors in London and have been travelling since 4th August 2016. At the time of leaving we were both 27 and had spent six years working.
Before starting this journey, we used our annual leave as carefully as we possibly could to explore cities in Europe on mini-breaks and also to travel to far away places we had never been to before. We often dashed out of the office to catch the first Friday evening flight and returned home in the early hours on the Monday, before going back to work that same morning. We saw it as a challenge to maximise our days off and visit as many new places as possible. We knew, however, that 25 days off a year just wasn’t enough to travel as much as we wanted to, and although sabbaticals were possibilities, they would restrict us to a six-month trip. We therefore decided that the only way to travel without restrictions would be to take the plunge and quit our jobs completely.
The budget we have set ourselves is £75 a day as a couple including all accommodation, food and drink, activities and transport (excluding flights). Our aim is to see as much of Central and South America as possible, before moving onto Asia and seeing some more of Europe.
We expect to be away for 12-18 months but have not set any definitive timescales and will see where the adventure takes us. Follow our blogs on this website as We Backpack…
